It's a pity you don't have a donate button! I'd without a doubt donate to this brilliant blog! I guess for now i'll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to brand new updates and will talk about this blog with my Facebook group. Talk soon!

I think the Art Show (with caps) is probably what is being asphyxiated. (The pop-up shop and hyper local art venues will probably be the model moving forward, but as Margot notes, most shows are only profitable from the stand point of connections.) It is the old revenue generating models for artist that are dying. Which is really annoying since so many of us had just gotten the hang of them!

It seems to me the inclination for thoughtful design and utility is actually on the upswing. It's no accident that Target works with Michael Graves and other famous designers. The masses are actually starting to think more about design. In our Austin bubble I see a huge inclination toward handmade. I agree that not everyone is yet up to speed with the price increase that goes along with that, but I really think as people become reacquainted with the making process, concepts like that will naturally follow.

Is it perfect? Certainly not, but I feel hopeful about the paths we've chosen. So much so, I truly believe independent artists, designers and craftsmen will be the folks leading us forward. It is no accident that some of the most thoughtful and insightful blogs are written by artists in all media. Leadership isn't much more than thoughtfulness and action in the face of change. Thanks for helping lead the way.

Boy do I hear you! I only do one show a year. Some years have been good others horrible. By the time I calculate the time spent setting up, sitting there, and breaking down, profit margins are very slim. I keep reminding myself that I am also collecting names of people that might take classes from me some day.

very well said Kerri...I do feel your pain. I'm thinking I'll be one of those wide-eyed artists soon just craving for me & my work to be noticed or that people will love it. But love can't buy stuff right? Something must be done!

Hi Kerri, I bought 2 pairs earrings at Wildflower in Richardson and talked to you. Since then I've told some people about you when they admire the earrings. I think your artwork is affordable. There is always going to be tough economic times going on. From my point of view, the festival organizers are charging too much for vendors. I looked at 2 festivals this year and the up-front costs were too great to justify. I'd have to produce a lot of inventory AND sell it to make it worthwhile! I am moving towards art shows now. Perhaps a different type of venue that isn't so expensive on crafters. Sure I could try to buy materials myself but I just don't have the time and it wouldn't come out the same anyway! You create unique art, and that is the point... you aren't just putting craft materials together. I can see the difference and that's why I bought 2 pairs of earrings! We have a silent auction coming up Dec 11 to raise $ for our church class service projects. Wondering about some way to include your jewelry, hm...

My 5 year old daughter, who loves to color and draw, has decided she will be an artist and "draw on the computer like Mommy does" when she grows up. I love that she sees working at a creative endeavor as a possibility for her future. Positive modeling through hard work and creativity, while doing our best to be present for our kids, is what my husband and I hope to teach them by example. All the best to you in your continued creative endeavors!
